Tender loving repair of,
All that was or is
Gaining popularity in recent years, boro is a visible mending practice with origins in the cold and harsh conditions of northern Japan. It was a tool for survival. Today, we can learn from this practice as an antidote to the current global climate of excessive textile consumption.
Rhyannan’s adaptation makes adjustments for Western pattern cutting techniques and materials. The aim is to preserve the functionality of the garment and reconnect us with our clothes through expressive repair.
Boro repair is not a one-time affair but a continuous process of rupture, repair, and renewal. You keep these clothes, and love them all the more for their quirks and their flaws. It is a request to treat ourselves and others with this same tenderness.
