Arashi Shibori:
History, Techniques, and Modern Adaptations in Textile Art
Arashi shibori 嵐絞り is a very rare textile practise, even in Japan. Rhyannan’s work is an adaptation of this tradition, using modern techniques and materials.
At its most basic, cloth is wrapped around a pole, bound with string, compressed and dyed. Over 100 variations of pattern can be produced using this deceptively simple method. It was invented around 1880 by Kanezō Suzuki, who was inspired by paper wrapped around his pipe.
While traditionally arashi shibori was created with indigo dyes on cotton for yukata worn by men, contemporary artists like Rhyannan explore diverse materials and dyes
Today there are two people who are considered masters of this tradition, Kaei Hayakawa and Ana-Lisa Hedstrom. Rhyannan has spent time learning under both of these artists and developed her own unique style within arashi shibori.
