Innovative Shibori:
A New Genre of Textile Art
This new shibori method was developed under the expert guidance and mentorship of both Kaei Hayakawa and Yoshiko Wada who highlighted it as being a ‘new genre’ within the shibori world.
This innovative technique allows Rhyannan to blend her drawing and linocut with traditional shibori practices, resulting in illustrative artworks that showcase the ghostly beauty of shibori while appealing to a Western audience. This method distinguishes itself by producing painterly effects unique to shibori, while drawing inspiration from printmaking traditions that have long influenced artistic practices in Japan, China, and Europe. The result is a harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western artistic sensibilities, creating textiles that are both visually striking and culturally significant.
Wada-san and Hayakawa-san praised it highly. Their endorsement carries immense weight in the textile community, given their esteemed positions. Yoshiko Wada, renowned as the founder of the World Shibori Network and globally recognized as the foremost authority on shibori, has expressed enthusiasm for this innovative approach. Similarly, Kaei Hayakawa, a revered shibori master, accomplished sculptor, and the last traditional practitioner of the legendary Japanese 'arashi shibori', has praised the technique's ability to elevate shibori to new heights of expressive art.
Rhyannan chose to depict pupmkins, after the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
