Lens on Legacy: Grant-Funded Exploration of Japan

This selection of photography captures Rhyannan's experiences during her month-long research trip to Japan in May and June 2023, funded by the Daiwa Foundation, Great British Sasakawa Foundation, and World Shibori Network.

The visual narrative spans from the earthy, traditional aspects of Japanese life to the neon-lit, hyper-capitalistic cityscapes, offering a multifaceted view of a culture that was isolated from the international community for 265 years. Her lens skillfully juxtaposes the tranquil serenity of Zen temples with the frenetic energy of dense urban landscapes, providing a nuanced portrayal of contemporary Japan. The collection includes intimate glimpses of everyday life, such as market traders at a flea market, offering viewers a taste of the ordinary yet vibrant Japanese experience.

Rhyannan also ventures into more controversial territory with clandestine shots from a pachinko parlor, where photography is typically prohibited. Rows of people engrossed in gaming machines, and locked away in smoking boxes, hinting at the addictive nature of these establishments being used as an escape from the pressures of ‘the Salaryman’ life.

In contrast, photographs of Kaei Hayakawa, Rhyannan's master sensei, in his cluttered studio provide a rare glimpse into traditional craftsmanship of someone who exists within yet worlds apart from the sensory intensity of a pachinko.

This diverse collection presents a multifaceted view of Japan, from its enduring traditions to its modern complexities, offering viewers an unfiltered perspective on a culture that continues to fascinate and surprise.
